Ruan Holds Annual Charitable Drive to Assist Homeless Shelters and Food Pantries - November 30, 2010

Fifteen central-Indiana charities will be the beneficiaries of the fifth annual 40,000 Pounds of Giving sponsored by Ruan Transport Corporation's Shelbyville, IN terminal. Ruan employees spearhead the effort to gather donations of food, new toys and personal care items for holiday distribution. The collection event will take place at three locations this year.

A 53-foot Ruan semi-trailer truck will be located at Shelbyville Public Square from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 2. Donations will be received Friday, Dec. 3 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Monument Circle in Indianapolis. Mayor Greg Ballard and the City of Indianapolis will shut down Monument Circle so that Ruan can park the trailer on the southwest side of the circle. The Indianapolis Colts' cheerleaders will be there to support this "Pack the Pantries" event and the Colts' interactive truck will park alongside the Ruan rig. The final opportunity to drop off donations will be Saturday Dec. 4 from 9:00 a.m. to noon in the Kroger parking lot in Greenfield, IN. The Indiana Pacers have also donated 340 game tickets to be distributed to donors and volunteers for the three-day event.

To ensure the success of this year's event, a local public/private partnership has formed that will pick-up donated items from the front porch of residents within the City of Shelbyville. Volunteers from Indiana American Water, Shelbyville Wastewater Department and Shelbyville Street Department will pick-up items between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on December 2. All donations must be placed on the front porch in a sturdy bag or box and labeled "DONATION". Those wishing to utilize the pick-up service are encouraged to call in advance of the event. To schedule a pick-up, call 317-392-0711 extension 1 and speak to Melissa Higdon or leave a message including your address.

The organizations to which 40,000 Pounds of Giving will distribute the collected items are Wheeler Mission, Midwest Food Bank, Gleaners Food Bank, Hancock County Food Pantry, Hancock Hope House, Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen, Angel Connection Food Pantry, Brandywine Community Church Food Pantry, The Salvation Army, Human Services, Sanctuary of Shelbyville Women's Shelter, Matthew 25:35 Food Pantry, Seventh Day Adventist Food Pantry, First Baptist Church Food Pantry and Shelbyville Community Church Food Pantry.

"We hope to positively impact our communities in their efforts to recoup and rebuild. This program allows everyone in the community to do his or her small part that cumulatively makes a big difference," says Ruan terminal manager and event organizer Carl Denny.
