Compensation and Benefits Manager

The Compensation and Benefits Manager is responsible for leading the organization's compensation, benefits, payroll, and HRIS programs. The incumbent will work closely with the Chief Administrative Officer and members of Senior Leadership, Human Resources and outside vendors to design, develop and implement a comprehensive Compensation and Benefits program that aligns with the organization's business objectives while supporting our culture, maintaining competitive positioning in the market, and ensuring legal and contractual compliance.
This manager will lead a relatively small team of Compensation, Benefits and Payroll specialists. This rewarding role requires team leadership competences, theoretical design capabilities, and practical hands-on work. The successful incumbent will see themselves and behave as a player / coach. 

  • Works with other leaders to define the Compensation and Benefits strategy for the company in support of overall business goals.
  • Responsible for design, administration, required filings, compliance and funding arrangements for company health and welfare plans for various groups of team members.
  • Provides strategic design, hands-on administration, and compliance of company-sponsored qualified, non-qualified and retirement plans, including annual audits.  Oversees the company’s participation in various multi-employer pension plans and union trusts.
  • Negotiates with, contracts with, and maintains valued relationships with vendor partners.
  • Conducts periodic analyses of company pay structures to ensure competitiveness and pay equity. Makes recommendations for adjustments as needed.
  • Recommends and executes annual compensation reviews and various incentive plan designs and administration. Works with Compensation Committee of the Board of Directors on senior leadership compensation and incentives.
  • Provides oversight of company leave management and disability accommodation programs.
  • Oversees Compensation and Benefits communications efforts and supports change management.
  • Leads the team and is the go-to person for internal and external knowledge on Compensation and Benefits programs. Oversees trend analysis.
  • Serves as primary point of contact on payroll and HRIS projects and initial source of issue escalation.
  • Champions other programs and policies in support of the company’s Great Place to Work initiatives, including employee wellness, flexible working and leave programs, etc. and works to ensure their fair and legal implementation and execution. 
  • Develops and maintains annual Compensation and Benefits budgets.
  • Bachelor’s degree required (Finance, Accounting or related field is a plus).
  • Total 10+ years combined Compensation, Benefits and HRIS experience; ADP experience a plus; experience as an HR business partner or equivalent would be a plus.
  • Expertise in Compensation and Benefits principles and design.
  • Excels at building and maintaining productive relationships and partnerships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborative approach – values diverse perspectives and is open to new ideas and approaches. Works effectively with others (across HR as well as with Senior Leadership and Vendors) to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
  • Ability to communicate with impact. Refined written and verbal communications skills that engage and influence the audience regardless of level and technical ability/knowledge.
  • Effective at leading change – facilitating the implementation and acceptance of change, leading others through ambiguity and complexity with empathy.
  • Experienced people/team leader – including talent management and development and succession planning.
  • Deep knowledge of statistical techniques used to analyze a variety of internal and external Compensation and Benefits data, including both descriptive and inferential methods.
  • Ability to source and use the most reliable benchmark data to inform Compensation and Benefits practices.  Superior ability to create financial models using excel or similar tools to assist with plan design.
