As we enter 2014, we took a look back at 2013—and it was another great year for Ruan! We hope it was just as good for all of our team members, customers, partners and friends. Here are our top 10 highlights from 2013. Enjoy!

We expanded our Integrated Solutions service: Ruan's Integrated Solutions offering encompasses all aspects of the transportation supply chain, giving customers their ideal combination of asset- and non-asset-based solutions that get goods from point A to point B safely and efficiently. Combining these services allows Ruan to create custom solutions that guarantee capacity and give our customers exactly what they need—nothing more, nothing less. In 2013, we invested in people and technology to grow our Supply Chain Solutions division, which includes a variety of services: brokerage, carrier management, logistics management, kitting and subassembly, custom-built transportation and warehouse management.

We welcomed a new chief financial officer and chief information officer: In early February, Steve Wood, former chief financial officer (CFO) for Becker Underwood, Inc., joined Ruan’s leadership team as senior vice president of finance and administration and CFO. In his role, Steve is responsible for managing risk, financial analysis, general accounting, tax and license, payroll and customer accounting. In addition to overseeing Ruan’s company-wide budget, Steve monitors and measures business practices and performance while supporting the needs of operating departments and more than 260 operations across the U.S. And, Vijay Naravane joined Ruan as vice president and chief information officer (CIO). Vijay oversees all information technology operations within Ruan, including the continued implementation of the company’s best-in-class transportation management system, RTMS2.0, and PeopleNet on-board technology in all units.

Ruan earned a SmartWay Excellence Award: For the second straight year, Ruan was honored with a SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for being a true industry leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency. Ruan is a longstanding partner of SmartWay, a collaboration between the EPA and the freight industry designed to increase energy efficiency while significantly reducing greenhouse gases and air pollution.

We were honored with a Patriot Award: In April, Ruan and Chairman John Ruan III were honored with the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve’s (ESGR’s) Patriot Award. The ESGR is the lead Defense Department agency promoting cooperation and understanding between civilian employers and their National Guard and Reserve employees, and the Patriot Award honors supervisors for their superior support of Guard and Reserve employees.

We launched the new ruan.com! In May, we invited visitors to explore our newly developed website, www.ruan.com. The new site was designed to create the most user-friendly experience possible with improved navigation, responsive design and valuable information for all visitors—from professional drivers and potential team members to clients and prospective customers.

Our driver was honored for saving a life: Ruan professional driver Adam Phillips was running his normal overnight shift on March 21 hauling milk in Johnson County, Indiana. But when traffic came to a sudden halt at around 2:10 a.m., his trip became anything but normal. A driver was trapped inside a burning vehicle nearby, and Phillips played a critical role in rescuing him. For his heroic efforts, Phillips was named a Highway Angel by the Truckload Carriers Association (TCA). And in November, he was named the Hero of the Highway by the Trucking Industry Defense Association (TIDA). Congratulations, Adam!

We named our fifth Driver of the Year! Mark Goforth was named Ruan’s 2012 Driver of the Year in July after being selected from a pool of more than 4,200 professional drivers. Goforth, who operates out of Ruan’s Topeka, KS, terminal, has been with Ruan since 2005 and has logged more than 1.5 million miles during his 15 years as a professional truck driver.

Our team members were honored by the IMTA: At the Iowa Motor Truck Association’s (IMTA’s) 2013 Management Conference in September, Ruan’s Director of Safety Lisa Gonnerman was named Safety Professional of the Year for her leadership, experience and dedication to safety. And Des Moines, IA, based driver Steve Millang was named the 2013 Iowa Driver of the Year.

We raised $157,500 during our United Way campaign: In early November, Ruan corporate team members joined forces to raise money for the United Way of Central Iowa. The Ruan team raised a record of more than $157,500 during the 2013 campaign, surpassing the 2012 record of $142,000 in 2012. In addition, 92.7 percent of team members participated during the campaign, and many of them increased their previous giving level.

Our friends at the World Food Prize Hall of Laureates achieved LEED Platinum certification: The World Food Prize Hall of Laureates was awarded LEED Platinum certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, the highest possible rating for leadership in energy efficiency and environmental design. In 2001, Ruan Chairman John Ruan III pledged $5 million and led the effort to renovate the former Des Moines Public Library building and transform it into the permanent home of the World Food Prize Foundation. To achieve LEED Platinum certification, the building must meet standards in six different categories, including: Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality and Innovation in Design.

We wish you and yours a happy, healthy and prosperous 2014! Check back regularly for Ruan news throughout 2014.
