Prepare to Drive During Winter Weather Conditions

As temperatures begin to drop, it’s time to start preparing for winter weather conditions. Megasafe7 Rule 1 is Prepare to Drive. By properly planning and preparing yourself to drive, you are in a better position to safely complete your trip. Winter weather can spell danger for even the most experienced drivers—whether behind the wheel or not! You must be prepared to face the hazards that winter brings: rain, freezing rain, wind and snow. Don’t let the changing seasons catch you off guard.

Here are a few tips that can help reduce the risk of a crash while driving in the winter:

  • Plan your trip accordingly. Check weather forecasts along your route and allow extra time for traffic delays.

  • Increase following distance. Avoid driving in packs.

  • Be aware of black ice. Its shine can fool drivers into thinking it’s water. Black ice is most likely to form first under bridges and on overpasses, in shady spots and at intersections.

  • Stay alert. Keep a window slightly open to provide some fresh air.

Don’t ask your truck to do more than it can. If you don’t feel comfortable driving, park it! YOU are the Captain of the Ship!
