After the first winter storm swept through the upper Midwest just before Thanksgiving, a Ruan truck driver became stranded on a snowy roadway while en route to a delivery in central Minnesota. Situations like this often trigger a chain reaction of challenges: the driver’s safety is put at risk, hours-of-service limits may be exceeded while waiting for assistance, the operation is left short on equipment, and the customer’s freight is delayed.
Events like this highlight the critical importance of the partnership between the transportation industry and law enforcement. We all share the same goal—safer roads for everyone—which is why we’re especially grateful for Deputy Brady Pundsack, who came across our stranded driver and immediately stopped to check on him. While our operation worked from afar to coordinate support, Deputy Pundsack stepped in and truly saved the day.
Due to the storm, our driver was initially facing an estimated seven-hour wait for a tow truck, a delay that could have caused him to exceed his legal hours-of-service limit before help arrived. Thanks to Deputy Pundsack’s quick action, he was able to connect with a nearby tow company to arrive within just 30 minutes. And if the tow company hadn’t been available, the deputy was prepared to help get our driver to a nearby hotel for the evening to stay safe and warm until help could be secured. He remained with our driver until the truck was successfully towed back onto the road, ensuring he was taken care of every step of the way.
We extend our sincere appreciation for Deputy Pundsack, and to all law enforcement officers, for their dedication to keeping our roadways safe and moving. During the upcoming winter months, we are especially grateful for their willingness to help, often risking their own safety to protect others.
