Ruan Celebrates First SDAP Graduate, Chris Martin

Apr 28, 2026

As we mark the completion of one of our driver apprentices through the Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot (SDAP) Program, it is important to recognize the significance and achievement of Chris Martin, Ruan’s first SDAP driver apprentice graduate, based in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The SDAP program was established following guidelines from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) as part of a wider strategy to safely expand the accessibility to truck driving careers for potential candidates under the age of 21.

In response to this need, the FMCSA initiated a pilot project that aimed at collecting data and analyzing results from the standpoint of safety measures. This project implies that rigorous training practices, safety technologies, and effective monitoring are to be ensured so that trainees are ready to drive across state lines. After November 2025, the Safe Driver Apprenticeship Pilot Program stopped accepting new participants; however, those who has already enrolled and met the age requirements were allowed to complete the program.

Trainees of the pilot program should pass through two stages of probation under the guidance of experienced drivers. Chris exceeded the minimum hours required by the FMCSA of on-duty and driving time, paying attention to both skills in driving and safety competencies, namely controlling a truck, managing spaces, planning trips, and navigating. At the same time, all the machines utilized in this process were to be equipped with up-to-date and safe technology, such as automatic braking, monitors, and dual-facing video technology.

In his completion of the SDAP program, Chris showed a great degree of dedication towards professional growth, operational performance, and safety achievements. Under the guidance of his mentors, SDAP trainee and Ruan truck driver, Terry Owens, and the Cedar Falls team, Chris succeeded in passing through all stages of this program. Through each stage, Chris was efficient and precise, which showed in his end resolution of his successful graduation as a certified truck driver. Chris shared about his experience, “This program gave me a great introduction into the transportation industry. Without it, I wouldn’t be driving at the professional level I am at now. It has been a pleasure working with my mentor, Terry, and the rest of the local Ruan team in Cedar Falls. I couldn’t have asked for a more understanding and supportive group of people.”

His achievement represents not only individual success but also the strength of the program’s design and execution. Jeremy Carmichael, Vice President of Operations, noted, “Chris’ performance reflects far more than time behind the wheel; it represents discipline, professionalism, and a consistent commitment to doing the job the right way every day. He exemplifies what happens when opportunity meets accountability. The SDAP program provided the pathway, but it was his dedication and focus on safety that turned that opportunity into a true success story. We are proud of the driver Chris has become and look forward to the continued impact he will have on our team and our customers. This is an outstanding accomplishment!”

The graduation ceremony held for Chris highlighted the value of Ruan’s training programs, which prioritize safety, accountability, and career advancement. While the SDAP program has concluded, its impact continues to shape future opportunities, and Ruan remains committed to supporting initiatives that develop team members and advance the transportation and logistics industry.
