Developing Executive Capabilities: Carsten M. and the Iowa Technology Leadership Institute
Carsten is currently participating in the 2026 cohort of the Iowa Technology Leadership Institute (ITLI), a program developed by the Technology Association of Iowa to prepare professionals for executive-level roles through training in leadership, communication, and strategic thinking. He was first introduced to the program at the 2024 Iowa Technology Summit and was inspired to apply after learning more from Amanda D., a previous participant. Carsten values the program’s emphasis on collaboration and diverse perspectives and is eager to apply what he learns to his leadership role at Ruan.
Fostering Mentorship and Industry Connection: Amanda D.
Amanda completed the ITLI program in 2025, gaining confidence as a leader and clarity about her professional goals. She credits the program with providing valuable networking and growth opportunities, as well as a trusted support system of peers. In 2026, Amanda continues her leadership journey by serving as a co-facilitator for the American Trucking Associations’ inaugural Women in Motion IT, Operations, and Logistics Peer Group. This initiative brings together women from across the industry to support one another’s growth, share insights, and build meaningful professional connections.
Empowering Emerging Leaders: Will S. and Iowa Tech Connect
Will was selected for the 2025 cohort of Iowa Tech Connect (ITC); a six-month program focused on developing the next generation of technology leaders in Iowa. The program includes hands-on workshops, site visits, and peer networking across multiple industries.
He found the experience especially valuable for the opportunity to engage with professionals from healthcare, agriculture, finance, and beyond. These cross-industry connections have broadened his perspective and helped him better understand common leadership challenges. Will emphasized that the program underscored the importance of interpersonal skills like empathy, communication, and collaboration, alongside technical expertise, all of which he is already applying in his work at Ruan.
Putting Leadership into Practice
For Carsten, Amanda, and Will, these leadership programs have made a real difference in how they contribute to their teams at Ruan. From decision-making to collaboration, they’re putting what they’ve learned into practice in ways that support growth and success across the organization.
Carsten shared that as he begins the program, he is looking forward to seeing how professionals in other industries tackle challenges and think strategically. Amanda said connecting with peers outside of Ruan gave her new perspective and reminded her how important it is to build a sense of belonging within a team. Will found that learning how other organizations approach innovation sparked fresh ideas and energized his approach to problem-solving.
Advice for Future Leaders
When asked what guidance they would offer to others considering leadership development, Carsten, Amanda, and Will all encouraged a mindset of growth and service. They advised others to be open to new experiences, seek feedback, and embrace discomfort as a catalyst for meaningful development.
