Payroll Specialist
 
Performs a variety of payroll-related activities, including preparing input to payroll systems and processing payroll to ensure company employees are paid accurately and in a timely manner, and maintain an extremely high level of confidentiality.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Calculate and process payroll for various locations and employee groups including drivers, salary, and/or hourly employees, overtime or double time, vacation, holiday, sick, salary continuation, bonus, safety, per diem and/or reimbursement pay, advances, pay, taxes, deductions and/or reverse to voids.
  • Have a knowledge of and keep current with the taxation of salaries, benefits, and other factors
  • Research and correct any errors, and/or missing information and follow up if necessary.  Document and issue payment for missed earnings through wires, comdata checks and/or comdata cash cards.  
  • Maintain database including new and re-hire, terminations, rate changes, child support, garnishments, and other voluntary deductions as necessary. Create new codes within the payroll system as appropriate.
  • Reconcile the general ledger regarding payroll transactions
  • Answer incoming payroll phone calls. Respond to employee payroll questions or direct calls to appropriate party.  
  • Complete unemployment wage audits per state request.
  • Make photocopies, fax documents, file and perform other clerical functions.
  • Provide excellent customer service (both written and verbal) to internal and external contacts about payroll related issues and follow up as necessary
  • Perform other job-related duties and special projects as required.
Requirements:
  • Associate, Vocational, or Technical Degree or equivalent work experience.
Course(s) of study Accounting, Business, Payroll, Math, Finance, or related field of study.
  • Proven experience in a payroll position in a fast-paced environment required.
  • Requires knowledge of FLSA regulations and state and local laws
  • Strong computer skills and ability to utilize payroll software. 
  • Proficient keyboard skills and MS Office suite of software with particularly high levels of skill in Excel and Outlook.  
  • Good 10-key skills; excellent written and verbal communication; good judgment in highly confidential matters; high math aptitude; in-depth knowledge of payroll and/or accounting; ability to work with coworkers in a close area; able to set priorities and accomplish multiple duties of position without supervision and direction; able to work well under pressure in emergency situations regarding employee pay. 
  •  Ability to make decisions and use good judgment.  Must be able to perform work accurately.
