Aug 6, 2026

We are pleased to announce the successful conclusion of Ruan’s ninth annual Top Technician Competition, held last week at our headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. This annual event honors the exceptional dedication and technical expertise of a select group of maintenance team members from across our nation’s shops who play a critical role in ensuring the safety and performance of our fleet.

This year, Phillip Rorrer of Brooklyn, Ohio, claimed first place by scoring the most points in the competition. Rorrer, who earned third place at last year’s competition, received a $5,000 cash prize and will go on to represent Ruan at the Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC)’s national SuperTech competition in Pittsburgh, PA, this fall.

Kris Jones of Ramsey, MN, secured second place, while Anthony Gray of San Antonio, TX, finished third. Both earned cash prizes and will also represent Ruan at the SuperTech competition.

“At Ruan, our diesel technicians are the driving force behind everything we do in fleet maintenance,” shared Matt Fleming, Ruan’s Maintenance Operations Leader. “Their hard work, dedication, and technical expertise keep our fleet safe, reliable, and ready to serve our customers every day. Being recognized as one of our top technicians this year is a tremendous accomplishment and a reflection of the dedication it takes to be among the very best.”

Additionally, Ruan hosted a student version of the competition as part of our continued commitment to development through our partnership with the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). Student Austin A. took first place in the event and will represent DMACC and Ruan at the national level at TMC SuperTech this year.

We are extremely proud of our competitors and the level of professionalism and expertise they brought to the competition and practice in their daily diesel work. Congratulations to this incredible group, and a special congratulations to our top finishers. We look forward to watching them compete on the national stage in September!
