Ruan Receives 2019 U.S. EPA Smartway® Excellence Award

Oct 10, 2019

Ruan today announced that it has been named a 2019 SmartWay® Excellence Award recipient for outstanding environmental performance and leadership. The SmartWay Excellence Award, reserved for the top performing SmartWay partners, is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) highest recognition for demonstrated leadership in freight, supply chain, energy, and environmental performance. The SmartWay Transport Partnership provides a framework to assess the environmental and energy efficiency of goods movement supply chains.

This is the fourth time Ruan has received this distinction from the EPA. Additionally, Ruan has received recognition for our sustainability efforts by numerous industry publications. These acknowledgments are the result of numerous ongoing efforts by Ruan to remain a leading green 3PL provider. Ruan is one of only three for-hire transportation companies selected for the National Clean Fleets Partnership membership and participates in its annual Clean Cities study. Our fleet has green specifications including auxiliary power units that reduce engine idle time, efficient progressive shifting, auto-inflation trailer tire systems, and onboard recorders that monitor MPG, over-RPM, idle time, hard breaking, and over-speed driving. Ruan utilizes alternative fuel types including biodiesel, compressed natural gas (CNG), renewable natural gas (RNG), and renewable hydrocarbon diesel. Our CNG fleet of more than 120 trucks services customers in numerous industries and reduces millions of pounds of CO2 emissions. Ruan has also reserved five Tesla electric trucks to add to our fleet in the coming months.

Ruan will continue to contribute to the Partnership’s savings of 248.9 million barrels of oil, $33.4 billion in fuel costs and 119 million tons of air pollutants. This is the equivalent of the annual electricity use in 16 million homes. By joining SmartWay Transport Partnership, Ruan demonstrates its strong environmental leadership and corporate responsibility.

“This distinction from the EPA validates all the efforts and investments we have made to ensure we are operating as sustainably and environmentally friendly as possible,” said James Cade, vice president of fleet services. “To us, sustainability is more than a business practice—it’s our moral commitment. We live in the communities we serve, and it is our responsibility to provide leadership toward a cleaner future.”

Developed jointly in early 2003 by EPA and Charter Partners represented by industry stakeholders, environmental groups, American Trucking Associations, and Business for Social Responsibility, the SmartWay program celebrated its 10-year anniversary in 2014. Partners rely upon SmartWay tools and approaches to track and reduce emissions and fuel use from goods movement. The Partnership currently has over 3,000 partners including shippers, logistics companies, and truck, rail, barge, and multimodal carriers.
