As many parts of our country have experienced significant winter weather in the previous weeks, we are reminded that driving during this season can be challenging and dangerous. To prevent injury, delayed delivery times, and for the safety of yourself and the motoring public, remember the following winter road safety tips.
Prioritize Your Safety
- Inspect your truck before hitting the road to identify and prevent potential hazards.
- Use your best judgment. Be aware of low visibility, roads covered with snow and ice, and other drivers on the road who may lose control of their vehicles in slippery conditions.
- When in doubt, pull over and find a safe area to park until the road conditions improve before driving again.
Perform Critical Maintenance Checks
While thorough pre- and post-trip inspections are always critical, colder temperatures can significantly affect multiple parts of your tractor and trailer and cause disruptions to your trip. Key areas to inspect include the condition of your batteries and cables; brakes; fluid levels, especially coolant, oil, and washer fluid; air system; tires; fifth wheel lubrication; and wiper blades. Identifying an issue with your equipment and repairing it before departure will help prevent becoming stranded on the road in winter conditions.
Carry Proper Supplies
Be equipped with cold-weather essentials on hand, including:
- Wear proper footwear
- Extra clothing layers
- Food and water
- Flashlight
- Windshield fluid
- Blankets
- Bag of sand or salt
- Snow scraper and brush
Stay Alert and Cautious While Driving
Sharing the roadways during winter weather can be stressful. Stay focused and calm while managing your speed, keeping a firm grip on the wheel to maintain control, increasing your following distance from the required seven seconds to more as road conditions deteriorate, staying alert for black ice, keeping your wheels rolling to maintain control and traction, and accelerate and brake slowly.
Being prepared to drive in snowy or icy conditions helps keep our roads safe for everyone. Stay safe and vigilant this winter season!
