Meet Kelly Hall, Metals Driver

Ruan driver Kelly Hall is not only a veteran of the transportation industry, but has also been a Ruan team member for almost 20 years. Hall serves dedicated customer Central Steel and Wire as the team lead out of T139 in Des Moines, IA. T139 has only four Ruan drivers, contributing to the terminal's atmosphere of tight-knit camaraderie. The drivers begin their day in the early a.m. with a bit of good-natured teasing as they assist each other with loading the trucks. Today's loads include sheets of steel and aluminum beams.

"We work great as a team," Hall said. "Also everyone is very respectful of each other's time and will coordinate vacation schedules."

Hall is on a Monday-Friday schedule and is home daily, allowing for ample time with his family. He also said he greatly appreciates the flexibility he has with coworkers as it allows him to pursue his hobbies, such as taking vacations with his wife to ride ATVs.

After the trucks have been loaded and tags double checked, Hall takes off for the day around 7 a.m. On average, he has five to eight stops a day; today's load is light with only five stops. Throughout the day he'll make deliveries to several Iowa towns including Knoxville, Montezuma, Marshalltown and Cedar Falls.

Hall began driving truck at the age of 18 and knew it was the career for him. The rolling scenery and steady pace make time go by quickly and keeps Hall excited about his job.

"I love trucking; you get to be the coolest guy on the road," Hall said, as he casually waves to a passing fellow truck driver.

Over time, Hall has perfected his current route regarding customer schedules and lunch breaks so that the day runs smoothly. At each stop, he is welcomed quickly by the customer, often teaming up to unload the metals as casual conversation flows.  Hall said he appreciates these personal relationships with customers-and the one he has with Ruan and his fellow team members.

"Ruan treats you well, and that means a lot in this industry. Other companies treat drivers like a number and as replaceable-Ruan doesn't," Hall said.

With only five stops today, Hall returns to the terminal before four o'clock. Next on the docket is light paperwork and tidying up the terminal. As terminal lead, he'll make and receive a few phone calls during the late afternoon to prepare tomorrow's loads. Hall credits the opportunities available within Ruan as the company's greatest benefit, as it has allowed him to take on his role as team lead.

"The number one differentiator about Ruan is the opportunity for growth and movement," Hall said. "Team members who excel at what they do can move up and around. Management is easy to work with and will help you get where you want to be."
