Maintain Proper Following Distance: Give Yourself Time to React Safely

May 9, 2016

Rule three of the Megasafe7 Rules of Safe Driving is Maintain Proper Following Distance. By keeping adequate distance from other vehicles, you’ll have enough time to react safely to the actions of other drivers.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) recommends a following distance of one second per every 10 feet of vehicle length. Most drivers need seven seconds of following distance in ideal conditions. Additional time is needed during night time, inclement weather, road construction, heavy traffic and other less-than-ideal conditions.

It is not a question of if you will get cut off; it is a question of when. As a professional driver, it is important to remain professionally patient. Always maintain a proper following distance after getting cut off by slowing down to regain your space.
